Nice roll. I know the Karachi of markets and smoke and busy colourful people.

We dined at a restaurant by the sea in DH area...white building, wood panels inside, leading to a nice open buffet area...if any of you Karachites can remind me of the name of that restaurant, you'd make my day.

I haven't returned home in the last 5 years, seems like a lifetime now and nothing sums it all up better than the word 'home' :)

Hmmm...strange. I have lived in this city for 11 years but I hate it. Hate it more every day. Can't understand why so many people are crazy about it. Karachi meri jaan??? How come ?

P.S. I linked you too .

i get so angry when they dig it up. i get so possesive when they ruin it. i get so annoyed when they litter. i get downright bitchy when people trash it. karachi is so truly my high.
great work baby. i hope you realize i take allll the credit for you :D

jammie said...

ps: faraz if you dont get down here this year, we aint renewing your KARACHI visa ok??

kAy said...

faraz-
thats 5 years too long buddy- make the trip in july-
jammie-
i know how thy feels.

mr adnan farooq hashmi-
you my freind are one of those victims of time who have taken what they have for granted.
11 years in khi and no appreciation is just plain sad.
i dont know whther uve lived abroad for any period of time, but if you have -are you going to try n deny the lack of sense of belonging you feel there as compared to the utmost satisfaction of being surrounded by people who speak walk and talk similar to the way you do? without any odd or curious glares as to ure race or ure cutlrue or language?
i think hitler did one right in his life. he embedded a staunch sense of patriotism in germany- bacha bacha germany ka deewana thaa...musharraf ko bhee kuch karna chahiyee.
karachi meri jaan- all the way.

Tree Elf said...

lol. yes definitely. strangely though, i have gotten very fond of lahore. it keeps reminding me of karachi as it was about 15-20 year ago...less traffic....and it is much much greener. getting used to the slower life....
but sometimes, you just can't beat boat basin being open till fajr!

and the sea! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
the SEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the SEAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i miss!!

Tree Elf said...

hmm, kay, you must live near the casino...those apartments..what are they called...the ones where abdur rehman of a level math fame lives? go down from the mazaar? or a little further up...the sea air must wreak havoc on your furniture and paint!

home will always be home. be it karachi, bombay or chennai. :)

thanks to the few pakistani friends i have made, i'm getting to know more about your side of things. keep it going.

Adnan Farooq Hashmi: I think you need to go and live abroad for a couple of years, then and only then will u realize what you have... Kay's right, you have been taking it for granted... i was also like you, but 3 and half years of living in states taught me that there is no place like home.. Karachi with all its faults, will still be my home.. and InshaAllah, if the current pace of progress continues, it will be a better place for my kids than it has been for me.

hai, karachi :)

Well, I have lived abroad for the most part of my life. So I know what you mean by the odd or curious glares one has to face aborad. Regarding Hitler; he himself hated Munich. That does not mean he was less patriotic.

Cities are formed of people, their interpersonal relationships, their tolerance for one another, their respect for each other, and the rights of fellow-citizens; cities are not buildings, roads, beaches, or restaurants. And I have felt a closer affinity to people in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, or even Hyderabad (which I have never visited). Sadly, the people of this city...well...maybe some other time. But I surely like to know why you people love Karachi so much ?

bohat hee ala kholz...i have one pic from saras room..i think raat ki..theres something about khi...
BUT I HATE THEM FOR SCREWING AROUND WITH IT!!!! every single road is dug up, its like,,they want to leave nothing the same..
so you all come back soon to karachi!

jammie said...

karachi right now is a nightmare traffic wise...but somehow im glad that there seems to be some kind of plan in the madness. the sh-e-faisal flyover being completed has resolved sooo much traffic tension that i can only pray the teen talwar underpass, when its finishes, does the same. and btw tree elf, the casino was demolished. you know that na?

kAy said...

jammie: break it to tree elf easy- that was ruthless! ;)

meyum : its magical at night from the balcony haina?

tree-elf: ure soommmeee what right about where i live magar nahi...
im much much farther down.
lahore ive been to a couple of times. magar never more than 10 days have i stayed. its a great place to visit esp with friends.:)

mr. adnan farooq hashmi:
instead of trying to convince you to love khi the way i do i shall just tell you why i love khi.
very breifly love is accepting something with all its short comings, "Karachi my low", i wasnt JUST talking about lil wonderful houses viewed from a top angle, there was infact symbolic connotations attached to it-
yes u are right- there are lots of things wrong with the city- but there are lots of things right with it as well. i like the people here better than i like them in islamabad or lahore or even pindi- thats not the point. because that is about personal association. its very relative.what works for me may not work for you-but i dont want you to think what works for all of us in khi is on some superficial level like building ad beaches and all that you mentioned- yes its wonderful we have all that and yes when you visit those places with people you love it becomes a part of ure existence, a part of your life.
a lot of us have been through a lot in khi. we were born and raised here-
its like family- ure born with them... learn to live with and love em- would die defending your parents haina? same feeling...prized possession wali aati hai khi kay saath.
:) you may totally feel like that about another city... as long as you feel like that about ANY city you know my point.

Adnan Farooq Hashmi said...

Good answer. By the way, I was born in Karachi too. Keep the pictures coming.
:)

Tree Elf said...

what? the casino is gone? hmm..what else are they taking down over there?!
argh, the city has grown too much!

Khizzy said...

kAy...i absolutly loved ur explaination for why u love khi!
i completely agree...and reading it actually got me all emotional!
thats the same thing i say when im asked to decide where i enjoyed living more...khi or lahore(i am then confronted with the realization that iv lived in both places the same amount of yrs...but since i was born here...i choose khi)
phew!im rambling!
but i repeat i loved wat u said...and im so proud of u and ur 'depth of thought'!lol!

apna karachi rocks! the bestest city in the whole world! you should put up your pics on the karach metblogs. great work!

No pun intended, but just to point out that people can have different opinions, I would love Karachi if I had a schaufer to drive me around, and a few other things. Like Adnan, I do not understand when someone says they love NYC or Karachi. Once again, no pun intended, no explanations or interpretations necessary. However, I must say that Karachi has the lowest community sense in all of Pakistan.
