So a friend just called to ask if i knew/could get a hold of the band "Strings" for him. For those who do not know what "Strings" is and who they are, they are only one of the top music bands in the sub-continent. They even did the OST for Spiderman a few years ago. An old feeling of utter joy.
Khizzy and i always discuss how cool and awesome it is that we have been blessed with such easy access to the creative community in Pakistan. not everyone in the world has the ability to pick up the phone and call such a hi-fi celebrity and know them first hand...a privilege i may add khizzy and i have had since our college days and at the risk of sounding totally arrogant, even before college days.
at this point i don't care if i sound floosy or superficial because i feel great about the fact that i am able to be a part of this creative network... this community of talented people, some on first hand basis and others if not first but at least on the basis that if i reach out, i can get a hold of them.
where else? where else i ask can someone be as lucky?
you may argue that our nation is so tiny, and i am from a privileged background, that is why these people are so accessible. yes. perhaps that is so. but what i'm saying, its wonderful to be that person in this country. we may be a small country, but our talent is not measured by that. not by a long shot.
if i was someone else somewhere else, i would have never been able to witness creativity as closely as i have had in Pakistan, being a Pakistani.
With this post all i really want to say is that i am honored to know you, all you creative people who have represented Pakistan in your own creative ways and created waves globally.
Hats off to you!
ps: what is it that they always say on tv these days? better to be a first class citizen in your own country than a third class citizen in someone else's.... we can sort of in a weird way apply that line here too.

lol ... i dont know how and where it started.
sometimes i feel like a talent agent or a talent coordinator.
pick a name...and ill find a number and connection to it.
six degrees of separation is what the creative world in pakistan is babe!
its awesome!
blessed.yes. and more power to being first class citizens of this country. i love the dheetaaii with which we live here.lol.
boy Kay I'm happy to know you too, and I see you going places
errr via your blog I mean
"better to be a first class citizen in your own country than a third class citizen in someone else's"
in reality our people are not treated as a citizen of any class in our own country, there is only one class "VVIP" and "Above the Law" class.
as a third class citizen, though I miss my city and country,I am respected and happy in dais pardais!
better to be a first class citizen in the whole damn world... nothing's impossible u know
If money and a wealthy background makes you a first class citizen then yeah it IS better to be a first class citizen anywhere PERIOD.
And specially in a country where money can buy rights, votes, people and so on, it must be very nice to be in first class.
Enjoy your ride:)
ok firstly before kAy jumps in, im seeing that this post is being interpreted in an entirely different context. which i KNOW isnt the case.
i don't think kAy was speaking of 'privileged', in the money context.
it has more to do with our profession and field of study, plus the college we went to... and rest assured all of the above include people from different walks.
i really don't recall kAy claiming to be filthy rich, nor has she ever boasted about having oodles of money and wealth. those things are personal and no ones business to comment on.
wasn't it discriminatory to comment about one's status or background? i understand that we defend the less privileged when they are discriminated against... but does one now have to be apologetic about being 'financially comfortable'. a situation God chose to put one in. how do you know that the person in question isn't doing his/her part in society by giving to the less privileged and not exploiting his or her status.
this post talks about being privileged in terms of having easy access to the world of culture and arts in Pakistan... and trust me, we're not all dripping of diamonds.
lol..my god.
too much has been read into this post.
honestly, to put it real plainly ill give you an example.
the fact is his fellow countrymen cannot call Bono up and ask if U2 is free that weekend....whereas i CAN call up JOSH(one of the top international desi bands) and say "whats up Q when are you coming down to Karachi."
that is ALL i wanted to say in this post.
where the heck did votes and social injustice come in from anyway :S
LOL
Kay,
Then I failed to understand your post.
I failed to understand more what you meant by first class citizen? in what context? You are a first class citizen cuz you have access to the celebrity or artist class in Pakistan but you not rich at all?
I wonder if my friend from shah fasial colony can do the same?
Or was it that these artists and celebrities are very accessible and if pappu from my gallee calls one of these guys to sing on his wedding, they will say "fo sho homie!"
I do have issue with you using First class citizen as we all know the context it is used. Unlike what your saheelee here implied, I am in no way telling you having money is bad! but you cant deny that if you were a girl who went to a government school in maleer and so on, you might not have been teh first class citizen with access to Josh(the most popular desi band). Not being rude or "hating on you", just a long time reader and trying to understand your POV. You in no way or shape have to reply and explain ofcourse. :)
furry, see again....
all i was trying to say was that i think its nice that everyone in the creative community is close knit and i have easy access to get in touch with them...
if i were an art school student say in the USA or Britain, i may not have access to the very highly credited creative contemporaries that reside there....because its a vast community abroad...
but here in Pakistan, anyone from my old college, not just me has the opportunity to be around really evolved high creative personalities-the top most, living in pakistan. on a one on one basis! maybe you dont understand how important that is to an aspiring creative...
i was just celebrating that fact.
that is what i meant by the whole stupid first class citizen analogy... simply that abroad, i dont think i would have even the chance to meet some known photographer or artist if i was studying there.
like i said... the whole first class citizen analogy was related to this "in a weird way". i know what context its used in... and i said i saw similarity here...its about chances you get.. opportunities you have or create and are not necessarily born into..whatever-that's besides the point and not relevant in this post....
you just probably cant see the weird link i saw..maybe no one can.. but hey...thats just me :P weirdness can happen! :)
and your comments are always welcome....i appreciate different perspectives on things :)
aslam: because ive used the word "ordinary"?
aslam: because ive used the word "ordinary"?
Kay knows all these celebs and I know Kay! Am I cool or what?! :P
Do you know Barack? Cos if you do, could you call him and tell him to stop sending planes into our country?
Thanks.
Oh yeah Kay...don't mean to steal you thunder or anything like that...but Strings sang the OST to Spiderman's Indian release.
They're really cool though. Like seriously =).
Furry: lol...ok first of all i dont think any of us is calling any celebrity to sing at our 'supposed' weddings.
i think it was a "hey how are you doing" call that kAy mentioned.khair...
and if your friend in shah faisal colony is involved in the media/creative community (like many people i work with and know from different localities)... then yes, he'd probably also be on a first name basis with the celebs he/she might work with.
(none of us are getting any free shows out of them, btw.lol)
its a fraternity... and there are chaii walas, coordinators, spot boys, sound technicians, producers, directors, designers, singers, actors etc... who all have easy access to each other not because of social standing or money... but because of their time being involved in the arts.
this post was about the fraternity... and was not meant to have the elitist connotations that are being associated with it.
thats for you aslam and YH :)
but then again, thats how personal blogs are. people post their personal interpretations of things, and i guess the comments section leaves them open to debate.
:)
i think khizzy has said enough to clear any confusion in mind.. and said it really well...
its a fraternity and im glad to be a part of it.
YH: i think everyone knows strings couldnt have sung an urdu track for the original english version of spiderman so i didnt feel it necessary to specify... i think its still a pretty big deal out of all of india and pakistan they were given the honour- and anyway, its again totally besides the point :P which most comments have been with this post.. i guess noone really got what i was trying to say...except khiz ofcourse :P
all good...debating is healthy-
:)
aslam: to be very honest i wasnt trying to come across as anything when i made the banner...when i design for myself, i dont think "this is how i want to be seen"- i just follow my gut. oddly enough, i never really thought about how i may be being perceived by bloggers! strange i know- but this is one place, this blog, where i dont feel i need to prove anything to anyone :)
Bodhi: i loved your blog. :)
Hello kAy.
Every time I have visited your blog, it has brought a smile to my face, even if I have disagreed with your take on things ... Except for today !
Oddly enough, even after reading the explanations, this is the first post on your blog that I did not like at all. You sounded very unlike you (I don't really know you... but based on what I know of you through the blog... and yes I have been coming on here since you started !). I kinda understand what you were trying to say but still ...
I figured I'd just give you some feedback. I can't be a positive critic because I really can't explain the problem. I just know that there is one ... haha.
Anyways, keep up the good work.
Ciao
my god :P havent i ruffled more than a few feathers!
saady, sorry to disappoint you but i cannot help it but feel good about the people i know in life! and the fact they happen to be utterly creative... i shall boast boast and boast some more in order to celebrate the fact that i know them.
everyone chose to see this post as coming from an upitty high society snob, whereas it was just a joyful kudos from an ordinary girl from khi.
so be it! :)
It about volume too u know. The creative circle in Karachi is small compared to let's say of USA. You cannot compare 16 million people of Karachi to 300 million people of US.
Two things, 1) Yes, that is the main reason why people return back to Pakistan from abroad because of their need to be "someone". I have seen many people not adjusting well to the idea of being regular middle class people with no political and celebrity ties here in US (many!). Also, as my sister remarked, tauba you guys have to work so hard in US, even throw your own garbage out, thank god for our maids and help around the house. Lol!
2) You do have access to people in other countries. If you were a young promising singer going to Juilliard or Boston Conservatory, you will have access to accomplished peers and celebrated artists in your stream even Bono who may come to teach a class or two. Obama was a professor and several kids had access to his classroom at the business and law school.
Let's not confuse the issue of access to creative people with being a first class citizen coz that is a relative term. All of us define 1st class citizenry to mean different things. To me running water, electricity, well maintained roads, and safety of my children were more important than feeling important and like someone who knows someone in my own country. I don't think I traded my respect and dignity to aquire these things but I do agree that I am a "no one" in this country. I have no connections to the political and creative elite but still life is good to me.
At the end of the day it is not whom you know but who knows you! Anyways, please don't take it the wrong way, it was just my observation. I love reading your blog because you girls make me feel so good and happy for Pakistan.
nida B-
i think you half got what i meant..firstly, you understood exactly what i meant when i said we are not as grand in quantity which makes it easier to have creative celebs easily accessible...but the whole part about having good middle class lives in the US is totally irrelevant and i specifically said i only applied that whole stupid first class citizen theory in the aspect of accessibility to the creative field...and NOT just in a classroom capacity...but one a one on one name basis where sometimes they call you up for some work personally or ask you to join them at some event....but okay, you might have that in the states too... point being NOT AS MUCH as we do in pakistan...
thats all!!!
as for your last point... i have sore finger tips for having to write again and again my first class citizen comment was meant in the purely creative sense- roti kapra makan paani draininge sweage education future job career has NOTHING to do with what i wanted to say in this post... clearly EVERYONE misunderstood so rather than argue more or explain myself i'll just say IM WEIRD- I MAKE STRANGE PARALLELS AND TWISTED ANALOGIES.
dont shoot the good guy :P
and i completely agree- its who knows you.. which again was the whole point of this post which noone got :P
now its actually funny ! haha.
you guys drive me insane:P
cheers!:)
it drives me insane when people write "cheers".lol.
i imagine the whole british accent bit.
:D
cheers, kAy.
ok so im wide awake past midnight.faaarigh!
:P
a friend in college i hung out with everyday for 4 years and graduated with used to say it instead of "goodbye" to people.
i guess it caught on :P
haha...
So be it I guess !
It wasn't about "ruffling feathers" kAy. There is nothing wrong in celebrating the good people you know. It just did not sound right.
Anyways, I shouldn't be the one passing judgments. I just considered it to be my duty as an avid fan to share what I felt.
Have a good one.
Peace
hehe i know what you mean- of course and exactly. its fun being someone of course without the misinterpreattions of wealth and fame and just on the basis of a fraternity- and it makes you feel first class. simple. and youre not blogging to appease the world or come upto anyones expectations. you blog about things as they come to you and your honesty is necessary and amazing. anyone who wants to continuously judge or misunderstand or purposely misinterpret your words to feel superior doesnt get it now and chnaces are never will. :)
CHEERS ;)
jammie did that on purpose!
:P
killing me softly with these "cheers"!
lol.
saady-
i totally respect you not understanding me. you dont always have to :) part of the fun of being independent minded individuals. im glad however, you felt comfortable enough on this turf to be honest about how you felt.
that goes for all of you :)
jammie: i never for a moment doubted you would understand...partly because you are part of the fraternity like khizzy and know exactly where i am coming from. :)
khizzy: CHEERS :P
