The Land of Opportunities

Where had i vanished?
In New York ofcourse.
Its been a tough 3 months of settling down but i am officially off living off the floor of my apartment and have actual furniture.
Its all set up and i am ready to blog.

One of the things people are constantly asking me is "what i think of living in America?"
They ask this with a tinge of wistfulness in their voices. I mean come on...who doesn't want to live in New York in the east village of manhattan on scholarship? God has been extremely kind to me. And yet when i say it's been great i am given the impression i do not sound sincere enough. I mean hello..this is New York, partyclubbingwondefulanythingcanhappeninthiscity New York.
I am sincere.. really... i do love it here...but you can't ignore the unhappiness of the people you see around you. Yes, it's true, where one drummer drums randomly on the sidewalk and you stop to enjoy it, you understand that this poor guy is trying to feed himself through the pennies we throw his way... or the funny guy on the subway cracking jokes, holds his hat out at the end of his ride for a reason...so the spontaneous art happening on the streets is awesome... but its sometimes a result of something not so awesome.

on a happier note,
eid mubarak people!
they first eid away from home they say is always the hardest-
i hope those of you who got to be with family enjoyed it thoroughly!

cheers

k

Ahhhhh always a pleasure being the first to comment:). I was anxiously waiting and must confess it was worth.
Coming off an affulent educated background has its plus. One is positive, caring affectionate and generally want the best for everyone. And kay you fit well into this description
A good photographer has got to be a keen observer, being able to develop a connection with his/her subject thus pulling the best out of it. You ably accomplish it.
As for NY and its offerings, its the interesting blend of contrasting lifestyles which makes any metropolitan a fascinating experience. NY is no different. Keep up the amazing work and dont forget what you have already promised me. Posterization.hehe
Someday you will get this most unexpected call from Vatican, required to photophraph the almighty Pope himself. I shall call you the mythical Illuminati with a divine touch;)

I understand the culture shock that you must be experiencing here. I know little about you, but it seems to me that you have not connected to the mainstream lifestyle of New York. NYC is loved by people because of its resillence esp after 9/11 and the fast pace of life not because people are happy or sad or drepressed here.Despite the recession, you will find departmental stores and restaurants crowded. still, it is one of the best citoies in the world and that's why international students and tourits come every year in big numbers.

you spoil me with your praise.
posterization will happen but i wont ruin the anticipation for you and let you hang in there :)

gigi: you are right but you are also wrong.
i'm not in any sort of shock.. cultural or otherwise :P seriously there is nothing here that even remotely shocks me.
i love Ny for the same reasons you mentioned above...but who was arguing about that?
i am merely commenting that it cannot be called the land of opportunities anymore as there are far more opportunities elsewhere.
this isnt saying it isnt still worth coming to... heck its newyork...who in their right mind doesnt want to come here :)
i sure did.. eventhough the school i am at was so not my first choice.

I had my first brush with art on the streets in London this march. Some of it was amazing, some of it was just plain heartbreaking...In the end I was glad that my parents had given me lots of extra money which allowed me to keep giving out the change when ever I could though I still remember that guy who was whistling this amazing tune to perfection at a not so crowded tube station who I couldn't give anything cause I was busy enjoying life, I saw him too late...and I think he was blind... :|
